The whole North Carolina Piedmont beniftied for the hydroelectricity made by what became the Duke Power Company. Most of the industrial growth was concentratedin tobacco, textiles, and furniture. The Duke family caused Durhamto become the source for most of the nation's cigarettes. Towns continued to grow rapidly . To handle the industrial growth, the state had to be more organized. That meant that people had to be educated in the new ways and influenced to behave in new ways.
